  Dafina Georgieva

Dafina Georgieva was born on the 22nd July, 1989. She was a pupil at the A.S Pushkin High school in Sofia until she was thirteen and in 2003 she passed the entrance exams to the American College in Sofia. She was gifted with an exceptionally rich imagination and she felt equally at home drawing, writing and acting. Her words and drawings fill exercise books, sketchpads and diary pages. She was curious about everything: people, nature, animals... and angels. Her sketches were filled with angels. She illustrated all her personal adventures and described them in her diary which she took with her wherever she went.

Dafina will remain forever at the age of fourteen. On the 18th of November a car driven at enormous speed cut her down on the pedestrian crossing in front of the American College, depriving her of the chance to grow up and develop the whole range and depth of talents which she possessed. A thoughtless women behind the wheel of a car brought Dafi’s flight to an abrupt end.

Dafi’s schoolmates from the American College and other schools were shocked. They organized a spontaneous protests against the irresponsible behaviour of drivers in the Sofia streets and blocked the boulevard where the accidents happened. The Children’s parliament of Bulgaria organized a petition which was signed by more than 40 000 people in support of the cause.

The pupils of the American College built a memorial garden for Dafina, “Dafina Garden”. It is a spiritual garden built with donations from some of the most prominent Bulgarian sculptors and artists — Georgi Chapkanov, Kolio Karamfilov, Petrinen Gochev, Ina Damyanova and Rada Dicheva. The garden is divided into separate elements: Stage of Life; Japanese Garden; Stone River; Labyrinth of Secrets; Juliette’s Swing; The Wall of Wishes.

Dafi was always surrounded by a community of friends. She imperceptibly attracted people to herself. They called her Ronya — from a book by her favourite author, Astrid Lindgren, “Ronya — the Rogues’ Daughter”. She was always reading — Shakespeare, Andersen, Bradbury, Tolkien, Radichkov, Valeri Petrov. She performed as a puppet actor in an animated film, “Imaginary Concert”. She also provided voices for children’s roles in the cinema… Dafi loved what she did and experienced real joy from it. She made everything interesting, enjoyable, making people think and creating unexpected moods.

In addition to her creative talents, Dafi had another exceptionally valuable quality: the ability to love – which is why she attracted so many people and was always surrounded by people.
